There are a lot of square foot gardeners on here! You should have lots of replies soon.

I am only doing this in one raised bed... the rest I'm trying the 3 sisters approach and trellising several veggies I haven't trellised before in the others!

Enjoy, I know its a lot of fun!

I have quite a few raised beds. They work out great! Mine are in an area with terrible dirt- so it made it easy to bring in and contain new soil. I was just looking at the new Country Living magazine and somebody had the raised gardens (made with landscaping timbers- which mine are) and they covered the edges with willow fencing. Just high enough, to cover the not so beautiful timbers. It looks real cute. A little more formal/decorative than plain timbers....I think you will be very happy with square foot gardening. Have fun!

Howdy!
I am going to put in two 4x4 raised square foot beds this year. I tried for one last year. but ran out of energy and the weeds won (dratted cancer!). Things are better now, so I'm using concrete blocks to raise the beds and I have the pipe and netting ready for my tomatoes, pole beans and summer squash. I am hoping to get at least one of the beds done this week, before the weather gets too hot to do all of that digging!
Best luck!

I have been doing square foot gardening for years. I am not quite as strict about it as Mel is, but have gotten lots of good information from the books and have used this intensive method to get the most out of my small garden area.

I used the SFG method this past year for the first time and loved it. Got carried away with some of it and caused some of my onions to become too shaded by tomatoes on a trellis.

I will be repeating the SFG method this year, especially with my sweet onions, lettuce beds, mangels, etc. I have a pretty roomy garden but I want to pack in the veggies to produce more and to eliminate spaces that weeds normally would grow.

I'm not strict with it, except in my cold frame, but it has awakened me to the fact that all those years with traditional row gardening that I was wasting soooooo much space.

I love the approach of cramming enough plants in there that weeds don't have a chance to grow!

I just got done saying in another post that we bought this house from my husband's grandparents who did SFG. I kept their book and continued gardening the (lax) SFG way in the beds. I dont do the Mel's mix or anything, but I think the plant spacings and trellising are genius

** I have to say- its the only kind of garden I've ever tried, so I cant really compare

I do the square foot gardening method and have had great success with it. I try to grow all vining types on a trellis to save space on the garden floor and I love the way it works and looks.
