I have been wondering what those awful looking lesions were on the bases of my three zucchini plants. After a little research, I found out I had squash vine borers and the cure is surgery. I cut big ole worms out of each plant and some tiny ones in a few leaf stems. Nasty things. Then I heaped up sterile potting soil around the wounds. One of the plants has the first baby zucchini on it. I hope I save them!
Oh yeah, only one of my chickens would eat the worms, my enormous GLW. Good girl!

I am sorry to say, after surgery most of my plants look dead. But, I am happy that I killed those disgusting creatures!! I didn't even try to give them to my chickens- I killed them myself!! I hope yours survive! Did you read the tips about nylons and aluminum foil, on the other vine borer thread? Good luck!

No I didn't see the other thread. Didn't look hard enough I guess. I did read about nylons and foil on the website I looked at though.
