Deeply Rooted
We (me and my 4 yr old) started some Bloomsdale spinach and Speckles lettuce today, as an experiment.
Half will go under lights in the basement, half will go directly out to the chicken building (current temp. is right about freezing, but gets up to 5 C or higher on days when we get solar heating). Once the basement plants are well up, they will go out to the chicken building too -- probably on a shelf by the window, or I may see if I can figure out a chicken-protected thermally-buffered arrangement in the solarized chicken run.
I am hoping that cheesecloth will be sufficient to keep excessive chicken dust off the leaves, and that I can keep 'em safe from mice .
I figure, worst case scenario, they all croak and I lose $2 worth of seed, oh well. But *maybe*, if I'm lucky, I might get a bit of spinach and/or lettuce to eat come March or April, and learn something in the process
