Has anybody ever started their lettuce in a soda/water bottle? I just took two quart sized water bottles, used a funnel to put in starter soil, and filled with water a little lower than the soil height, then used the funnel to put in lettuce seeds. I screwed the tops back on and put them in my south facing window on my enclosed porch.
I got the idea from watching a program about apartment dwellers who are growing a few vegetables in their windows bc they have no garden space.

So, it is like a terrarium, Ducks'?

Seems like it would not be able to take too much light (heat). And, that the plants would therefore be very slow growing.

Sounds also like it would be a fun thing to do. Mom & Dad used to enjoy their terrariums.

YES!! The idea is to start them in a warmer place than my beds, which are still REALLY COLD!! If they sprout, I thought I'd let them grow about 4-6 inches, then cut open the plastic water bottles and transplant them. I've already direct seeded lettuce--no sprouts, yet. :(
Oh, yeah--I'll take some pictures if it's a success. :D
