I never have luck with seeds

By seeds you do not mean dahlia seeds, do you? They sell the tubers, (or roots?)

I would not either. Though, I did look it up and hybridizing seems like it might be pretty easy.HHHHHMMMMM.

For those that just have one or two dahlias and want to take a chance on leaving them in the ground. It's the wet that does them in rather than cold, once they're cut down in the fall stuff a container with straw and upturn it over the dahlia, this will help insulate and keep the rain off, if the tubers are planted below the frost level they should be OK. Uncover after danger of frost.
One way of storing is in a trench dug below frost level, lay the tubers in and cover with leaves and then a tarp to keep the rain off. This works well in my zone 7 and might work in colder zones, it's worth a try.

Our frost zone is about 4'. At least that's where the water pipes are buried. That would have to be some Amazonian type of dahlia...
But it does make me wonder about experimenting...I think that's a great idea Annette. Then I wouldn't have to bother with digging and storing. They aren't too expensive to give it a try.
