I went and did it this week. I finally got a smart phone.
Sorry @Carol Dee and @Nyboy , I've joined the dark side! :p

What took me so long was the extra dollars above what we are already paying, but I talked to a salesman who said if I kept my same plan the cost stays the same. So there was nothing to keep me from it anymore except fear! It will be a little handier for my business too I think.

But I guess I'm not as dumb as I thought because through a bit of trial and error I'm learning quickly. I have responded to a group text, (impossible on the old slider) and sent my sis some pics and checked the weather. All that today! I know! :) Haha.

You experienced smart phone users are thinking, oh, how quaint!

But I promised myself I won't turn into one of those people who have their faces glued to their phone constantly. My data is turned off except when I'm at home so I can use my house WIFI.

Just though I'd let y'all know what a modern girl I'm getting to be. :D

Somehow I feel I may be the last hold out on the old phone. It will be with me until it dies of OLD AGE and they no longer have a replacement.

@Carol Dee , your phone serves a purpose and for many people, they find them useful and more appropriate than a smart phone. DW is on a tablet at home but it's a flip phone she uses as a cell phone and carries with her.

My attitude about these sort of changes Thistle' is talking about has always been that the companies have made these things (whatever they are, product or process) for a broad range of the public. It had better be made so that someone with average intelligence can use it if they hope to make a profit.

I'm someone with an average intelligence. If I have any problems, it's their fault!

You are plenty clever, Thistle'. I bet you have more dexterous digitS' than I do. That's my biggest problem with my smart phone. I carry a stylus in the little fabric phone case. Otherwise, I struggle ... and, I have to wear my glasses.

It only takes some practice and there are always bugs for companies to work out of products - more early than later.

Thistle, I'm sure you know you can get a little doo-whacky that enables you to take debit and credit cards with your phone. Might be convenient with your business.
My DH spends a lot of time texting his buddies. He's only had his smart phone about 6 months, but it has kinda taken over his life. o_O

No Carol Dee, you won't be the last one, (there's always @Nyboy you know) haha.
My husband is right in there with you. He's not interested in anything a smartphone can do with the possible exception of mapping. But he's dedicated to the idea that phones have a function, and that is to verbally make contact with a human being. Preferably one you know and have something to say to. Other than that he has no use for them.

So don't try texting him! It only annoys him!

Phones are for communication.

Old story, beginning airline industry came to railroad magnets to invest. They were told,"we are in the rail industry and not the airline industry." Correct answer should have been they are in the transport industry with rails being one aspect of it.

Your DH and I sound pretty much alike on that issue. (I think I like the guy.) ;)

Yesterday I was just thinking about when my free upgrade is due. My flip phone getting worn. I did have a smartphone problem was I had no signal at home or office which made it useless. Since I had wifi added don't know if that will make difference. Which phone did you end up with?

Before the Wildbunch aka my children broke my phone it got a much better signal out than DH's. Mine was like $20 and his was like $250. My minutes cost $10/month pay as you go and his cost $120/month plan. I still haven't broke down and bought another phone because we have a house phone also $10/month bundled with our internet bill. He wants me to get a smart phone but I tell him the reason I don't get a phone is because we can't afford it because of his phone bill every month, also the reason we don't have cable with his ESPN or vacations anymore, or any other thing he mentions we should buy. He refuses to go back to straight talk ($45/month) of course I also have no problem with doing without ESPN, lol.
