We don't want you shedding tears over your flowers, LadyV.

What about Gaillardia pulchella, Indian blanket flowers? There are quite a few varieties. You can see here: USDA Plants Profile (click) that various species of gaillardia live ONLY in the Southwest and all of them live in one corner or the other of that region.

I like how they tend to bloom all summer :).

Marigolds, lantana, purple cone flower, Russian sage, portulaca, Mexican heather all do well with little water. You might try adding some of that new potting soil that has the water crystals in it. It holds water much longer than regular dirt, so it wouldn't dry out so soon in your Arizona sun. Also, there might be somewhere to get some more clay-like soil. Matter of fact, you and I could trade a truckload. My Missouri red clay for your Arizona sand.;)

Go for a drive in the desert when it is blooming. Take a book on identifing native plants and go from there. I figure I would not want to have to run up my water bill if I could help it. Unless you have a manicured grass lawn the native plants and cacti would look great. Yucca grows ANYWHERE. :D

You can start them from seed, just as simple as anything, LadyV.

Since they are perennials - you find Gaillardia in garden centers. They are described as "short-lived perennials" and that's about right. However, they self-sow happily.

In one garden, I had them growing for about 15 years. None were the original plants but I could have saved dozen of seedlings that would grow each spring around their feet.

Steve :)

The lotus and the rose are the best flowers to not only ton grow but to see and fill too. So my suggestion is to go for it and you will definitely get good results. Tough a bit hard to grow but need to take that much amount of risk to get the best.

If NOTHING else, buy a Christmas Cactus. I kept one by my sink for at LEAST 6 years, didn't repot it and HARDLY ever watered it. I decided to pay attention to it and seriously water it and it tripled in size in about 2 months.
