Lot's of people talking about trellissing their cukes. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. I can't because the only soil fit to grow veggies in is in the garden. I can't leave a permenant item there, not even a post (it's a power line right of way, I can put up anything I want, as long as it can be taken down quickly). So, for those that can't or don't trellis their cukes, I have a little space saver:

I plant cukes with my broccoli. I intersperse the broccoli around the cuke patch. By the time the cukes need the space, the broccoli is done anyway. If you plan it out, and plant the later broccoli furthest from the cukes, you get a long season. Just thought I would share, since we're talking cukes ;)

Okay to talk summer squash too, MontyJ?

Since mildew often slows the summer squash by late summer, planting seed in late June or setting out seedlings about the Fourth of July brings on the zucchini or yellow crookneck about the 1st of September. I have used the early planting of cabbage as the first crop on that ground but broccoli should work. Something like Packman is out of the way just about the same time as the early cabbage.

The cabbage is likely to be there for a few days into July but they protect the squash plants during their first few days in the garden. Then, the cabbage will be gone and the squash can take over the ground.

who may end up with an enormous amount of summer squash in September if it isn't a bad mildew year ;).

Sure Steve, talk about anything you want! Hey, you can run around in a cat suit toting a grappling hook if your inclined to do so ;) Oxymoron here: I don't like summer squash, but I love zuchinni.

Well, I "lumped them together," MontyJ. Summer squash & zucchini . . . Sort of like I lumped broccoli and early cabbage.

We could lump summer squash and cucumbers but the cukes don't have such a problem with mildew as sometimes hits the squash. Now, melons may have the mildew problem but take so long to develop fruit . . .

blah, blah, blah . . . :/ did I see somebody with a grappling hook?!!

I have a piece of fencing that I use for my cukes. I just stick two or three e- fence posts in to hold them in place. Once they are done, the fencing is easily removed for another purpose.
