I am trying out straw bale gardening this year. Actually it is hay, they were out of straw at the local garden store. I have 8 bales broken into two beads about 4'x8'. I have conditioned them and transplanted some cucumbers in 4 of the bales. I am planning on putting in some eggplant also, but it isn't big enough to go in yet.

I love my experiments although a lot of them do not turn out the way I like. I probably won't do this one again because of the cost. If I had access to free or cheap hay I would but at $6.50 a bale it is pretty pricey.

Our local nursery is doing several of them this year. I personally don't like the look of them and for the price you might as well save up for some boards and just do a raise bed.

I am not crazy about the look either. It is beside the greenhouse so it doesn't just stand out as much
