How about this for a creative way to grow strawberries? I imagine this would prevent a lot of disease problems, but you'd definitely have to cover them with netting to keep the birds out.

Now you got me hungry for fresh strawberries. :drool Neat way to grow them-no stooping or bending over to pick them!

That's a really clever idea! I've been so annoyed with our bed in the front yard, I was seriously thinking of just yanking it out...there's LOTS of other stuff I could grow there that would give us more bang for the buck. I had planned on getting some pallets and leaning them against the shed wall to keep the berries out of the dirt, but this one has me thinking too...could just attach gutters to the side of the shed and let them grow in them. Hmmm...

I have a length of gutter I've been hanging on to after we replaced a section on the house. I had been saving it for the chicken coop, but now I think I'm going to try this instead. I've had a couple of strawberry patches here and my raised bed did best so far, but I still have trouble with the quack grass, even there.

I wonder what it will take to keep them from drying out?

I like it! Mickey your definately onto something. I can just picture your shed with gutters of strawberries on the S side, and lettuce on the north side like this set up here http://www.theeasygarden.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=30572 this is an old thread and the original poster never did update us on how it worked. Page 5 also has some good ideas on how to tweak the system that we kicked around.

But its possible. I really think with the urban movement that we're going to see more and more unconventional set ups and tiered designs created to take advantange of vertical space. Once we move and I get my greenhouse I'm going to be looking hard at doing this vertically and unconventionally so I can use every inch of space available.
