http://www.durgan.org/URL/?AESAE 21 June 2012 Strawberry. Fourth picking
Fourth and last picking one pound 8 ounces or 0.7 kg. There are some every bearing in the patch so they will be a few more during the Summer. Each plant was watered with a pail of rain water to keep them healthy. The fibre glass screening works well for bird protection, but the edges must be secured or the small bird crawl under. Total production from this 8 by 12 foot patch this season was 13.5 pounds or 6.1 kg.

Weight of berries obtained today was 3.5 pound about 1.6kg. Very hot and sunny today with almost no breeze.

This is the second picking of strawberries. Five pounds (2.3 kg) obtained.

There are some ever bearing plants, which are not high quality, meaning not full body and sometimes misshapen.. The remainder is June bearing, which are excellent. I will make a new patch in 2012 Spring.

I have several different kinds of June and everbearing. I had planted several hundred and they spread, and more spread, but I could not keep the weeds out, so I dug them up this spring and transplanted to a new place. I put beans were the strawberries were. I also bought 25 each of Winona Giant June and 25 of Fort Laramie everbearing. The strawberries did not do as well in the new location, so I made a new box and going to transplant to a new area away from the garden. Your area is 8 x 12. I may just try to make mine that size. It gives me something to compare with since you have all the pictures and weights of what your area produced.

My new patch will probably be a long row. The mat system makes allowing new suckers to grow awkward. I have an area where I can keep a new row every year and remove the three year old plants, also I can make a simple fibre glass mesh cover for bird protection with little difficulty. Weeds can certainly be a problem, and they tend to mix in with the strawberry plants.

I am impressed with those beautiful strawberries. I haven't grown strawberries in a long, long time. I wish I had the room for some. Your pictures of your strawberry harvest look so good, that I am trying to bite the computer screen.......

Nice and that screen is just window screen? How do you secure it in place? I'm going to have to try that idea. Very cool

Fibre screening is reasonably heavy and very strong, meaning it doesn't snag on bushes. It will stay in place unless there is a strong wind. Sometimes I place a piece of wood along the side mostly to not leave a space for small birds to enter. It is the best netting that I have encountered. I bought a 8 foot wide roll 100 feet long. The screening is the same used for a house door.
