OK, I got a new shipment in today of strawberry runners from the USDA germplasm program. And, they are infected with Strawberry Mild Yellow Edge Virus (SMYEV). :/

So, can I treat the plants to get rid of this? If I can't treat them, is it possible to keep the eventual runners from having it? It is something that is transmitted by way of aphids - will it be a threat to my other non-infected plants? Should I even try to grow these...?

I don't mind having them as just an ornamental type plant (they are variegated with white berries) as long as the virus can easily be contained....

HELP! :fl

You know Broke,

I searched and searched and all I could find is the reference to this disease and that it will diminish your strawberries over time. Nothing at all about curing it.

About the only recommendations that I could find were to remove and replace with new stock and or stock that is resistant.

I can only imagine that the reason they sent those to you is because they figure that you would be using these as a means to breeding or producing a resistant strain. One of the best ways to know if you have a resistant strain would be to introduce the virus to them.

Bummer, so now the USDA is perpetuating this by sending yucko stuff ..uggh.

Ron

Although, if they were in my hands, I would treat them with some Colloidal Silver. The plant would absorb the silver into its cells and the Silver would kill the virus. If this is being produced via the Nucleotides within the Cell they may be DNA programmed and the Silver wont be of help at all, but if it is a free-agent virus where it moves about and jumps from plant to plant as it destroys then you can destroy it; it would only be a matter of figuring out what would do the trick.

Sorry- but I'd double bag them and trash them. Gardening is enough of an adventure, without planting something you know is a problem... The battle is difficult enough, with the surprises nature has in store!!! Good luck!

Well, I emailed the guy in charge of getting germplasm orders out and asked him what I could or should do about this and he says it's nothing to worry about. He says it is a mild condition that all strawberries end up getting which is why they are replaced every few years because over a period of time the production declines. I am curious tho if it MUST be transmitted from the parent plant to any runners since this virus is distributed by aphids...

I have no idea if it spreads through propagation, or not, but if the transmission of the disease is spread by aphids, just treat the plants for aphids at regular intervals. Hopefully then the runners will have a fighting chance.

Funny, although I have aphids attacking my Chinese Gui-lan, and my brussel sprouts, I have none on my strawberrys..

I have a very large strawberry patch, which is on its third year, and it was producing an abundance of berries this year. How many years should one expect out of them before the parent plants need to be pulled?

I have no idea :hu I'm thinking perhaps once the parent plants get established maybe I can somehow bag them to keep any bugs from getting on them and transferring to the runners. That why I'm curious if it is something that would travel thru the veins of the parents into the runners.....
