In my $$ saving mode, I'm thinking of starting flowers from seed, to keep on my partly sunny front porch in big pots. The brick is sort of brownish, so red doesn't really show up very well. White, yellow or pink looks best. What kinds of annuals would you suggest that would be showy and not too gangly for pots?

I really love calibrachoa, (aka "Million Bells ). They look like tiny petunias and they bloom profusely all season. Sanvitalia looks like tiny sunflowers, alyssum is a good compliment to anything. Coleus comes in a huge variety of wild colors, no blooms of course, but it's very colorful and can handle sun or shade.

I have seen calibrachoa plants for sale; I'll have to look for the seed. I am not familiar with sanvitalia but it sounds interesting. Alyssum of course is great, for a shorter plant. I wonder if moonflower would be successful in a big pot? Then I would have to provide something for it to climb, and all the issues that entails. Maybe I better stick to something that just bushes. I'm going to the garden store today. I will take a closer look at those flower seed packets.

I like to include a climbing plant in my pots. Sometimes that is what I use for the "tall" plant. I have some small trellis that work great for this purpose. I usually go for morning glories. I do love moonflower- but mine take forever to get going. I like more instant gratification for pots. Don't forget to take pics and show us what you come up with!
