I am considering using these construction mixing tubs from Lowe's, I have a few on hand, and they must be at least 8" deep, a couple of feet long and maybe a foot & a half wide...

what might be suitable in this type of shallow rectangular container?

Considering the time of year, lettuces, green onion, garlic, radish, spinach, so many possibilities. Almost any of the green leafy veggies would work I would think. I am sure others will come up with more varieties. :)

Thanks, I have an unopened pack of radish seeds I forgot all about!!! We just put down 2 lettuce varieites, cabbage, parsnips, spinach & carrots in another bed.

I am interested in year round though, what might they be good for in the other months.

I seem to be VERY dense in understanding the "size" of roots & their space needs for various plants...

Well for year round, herbs would be a good choice. The container would help control some of the more vigorous reseeders.

8 inches deep isn't a lot, but I would be willing to try cukes (burying a wire type trellis maybe?), summer squash, peppers should do ok if spaced out. I think you can grow a lot of things that you aren't "supposed" to be able to if the plants get a little extra TLC. I know I tend to pay more attention to my container plants than I do the ones in ground. :)
