Bean looking for me?

You can find me for quite a few hours each week, sitting on a bucket picking green beans. Bean at it for awhile.

First there was that bed of Jade beans that were sown in June. Guess what? They are back! Sometimes, the spider mites move in on the older bean plants. Despite all the problems I had with mites in the dahlias during the hottest weeks of summer, there aren't many in the vegetable garden. There aren't all that many beans in the second crop but a 3 gallon bucket here and a 3 gallon bucket there, adds up to a harvest.

Then, the peas were taken out in July and that bed was replanted to beans. They are coming on strong. That succession is important to me and something I've bean doing for years! The pea seed doesn't go in early in my chilly spring garden. However, when those peas began to fail - out they come! If the bean seed goes in by July 15th, I've got lots of sitting on buckets time in September. Sometimes it will have frosted by now and my bean succession will fail but it doesn't happen too often. One thing, bean plants can take rain & wind & cold and go right ahead and mature their green beans.

Now, I've just gotta time this right so the weather isn't bad when I'm out there sitting on a bucket! Earlier this week, I somehow thought that a predicted high of 77f would mean a pleasant morning. Didn't happen! Wind gusts above 15mph and temperatures between 49 and 60 until afternoon meant some cold pickin' for me with nothing but a lightweight shirt . . ! No more of that! I've been wearing flannel since!

Steve :)

Those upturned buckets can get mighty uncomfortable after a while. Have you seen the ones they make for hunters that have a padded seat?

I'm glad to only get 3 gal. at a time. That's about all the bean snapping I can handle in one day. :p

49-60 degrees would be a winter day here. We are getting rain! I picked butterbeans this morning and some of my green beans. Sounds like you are getting a good harvest Steve!

I remember my work friends scolding me for not wearing a coat in the "winter" when I lived in TX. Compared to WV winters, to me 45 degrees was WARM. Even here, I will hardly give up my flip flops.

My green pole beans did really well this year, probably because some of them were in a brand new bed this year. They definitely outperformed the ones in my garden. They also made a really nice privacy fence by our patio. I will definitely plant them there again next year.

The preferred garden stool is an upturned plastic milk crate but when I leave for that distant garden, I don't always exercise enuf foresight . . . (hindsight?) Need the buckets.

The Cascade Giant, rattlesnake pole beans did what they were supposed to do in the snapbean column - and then some. There are quite a few seeds drying for a winter pot of beans. I've neglected them again and that may mean that there will be volunteers in 2014. I didn't even know beans would volunteer until those things came along and would get away from me! I did some transplanting out of the path & such, but they handled the winter seed storage and such.

I'm a little cold-blooded in my olde age. I was out in very similar weather this morning but had a t-shirt, short-sleeve shirt and TWO heavy flannel shirts! I had to shed one flannel shirt about 9am but the other stayed on until noon. Now, it is a really nice Fall afternoon!

The farmers wife I buy milk from is growing those Rattlesnakes Steve. They were very handsome plants, and she has a lot of rows. We had a nice long garden chat the first time I went out to pick up my milk. They really like them ( the beans ) and now that my garden has more elbow room I'm putting them on my list.

I'm not ready to concede to fall yet and am still wearing shorts to work, although I had to keep my hoody on until noon! :p

I suspect the flannels and jeans will make an appearance next week. :(

They used to sell just the padded lid that you could add to your own bucket. Would even swivel! I don't know if they still make them or not but that would be nice. Sit between rows and go from one side to the other to pick.

Sitting is my preferred garden activity :p.

It is one reason that I want the garden entirely in beds. Four feet (or 2 feet from each path) is a little bit of a stretch for me in a sitting position but I can manage it.

The bush beans are not necessarily the best crop for a bed, however. I need to put a string on stakes about 12 inches up, entirely around the bed so as to have any path on the outside! At least, beans aren't like cucumbers . . .
