Interesting article and I feel bad for those folks. I can see that there would be issues if they were farming in a manner that caused much pollution and run-off for their neighbors, but as that doesn't seem to be their style, they should be considered on a case by case basis and allowed to continue.

Zoning was a major consideration for us when we were house hunting. We knew ahead of time that we wanted to "micro-farm" so our lot had to be outside of city limits. It was really a major blessing to find this place, right under our noses. The only thing on our wishlist that we didn't get was about 9 more acres. But with time, we plan to work at living debt free on this acre and eventually have a large farm and go all out.

I followed their other link for homesteading on 1 acre. There was a lot to chew on there, but I found it unrealistic for my particular acre. Too much of my land is tied up by my septic system! :p

with that 90 day cease and desist letter i think they can get a whole season of growing in before they get arrested! i'm sure there has to be a Canadian law on the books that can stop this nonsense from taking place. it is idiotic that someone could ever try and stop you from growing your own veggies on your own property!

Well, maybe one day we'll all protest and plant our veggies in with our flowers. Soon 80% of American homes will be lined with this stuff.

However, this is all our own doing... we've allowed this ordinances in our towns, we allowed HOA's to have unyielding power, and we've even paid over priced grocery stores to the point they would really loss profits if we started growing at home. This is our country! We buy our homes and our land... and we USED to be able to do as we please with it. To be the person who uses the land, and nourishes it while it nourishes us is now a criminal offense? What F$#!%*^ country do we live in?

Oh yeah, the one who's going to default on our bills... just like 90% of the country's people have been having to do to live!

SO LET US EAT BY THE SWEAT OF OUR OWN BROW IN THE DIRT WE ARE BLESSED ENOUGH TO HAVE TO TILL!

I wouldn't be surprised if more folks went this way. I know the number of folks who garden has gone up. Its not allowing them to take place, its how they are interpreted. You buy into a place with a HOA that your fault. People are uncomfortable with change so when they see something like that they are uncomfortable. The house in Michigan is like that.

The Canadians, well they probably pay less taxes with it being residential. And with all they plant, are they consuming all of it? That's whats left out of the story. If its not being sold then the govt doesn't have an argument. If it was all flowers or grass they wouldn't care but I can see how the govt might get upset with the zoning of the land if they are profiting off the sale of things. Yes they have a right to grow whatever they want on their land but you have to be mindful of big brother too. Ignorance of the rules is no defense.

If you want to read something really scary check out the UNs Agenda 21. Don't be misled by the stated objuectives, which sound great, check into how it's being implemented.
President Obama recently set up a commision to see how it could be implemented in the US. They seem to be leaning toward gathering the rural population into shared housing and farming the land collectively. How did that work out for Russia? Here, of course, we can look forward to the farms being turned over to Big Ag while the people live in Cabrini Green style apartments.

"A government big enough to give you everything, is also big enough to take it all away!" Thomas Jefferson

It's take away time!!! :somad

I am feeling you, Thistle! We've had many verbal warnings over the years to watch how deep we go. You get mad at your neighbor because they have a loud dog, you report them, establish an ordinance and then it will turn around on you when that neighbor doesn't like the half dead tree in your yard. We don't talk with our neighbors anymore, we just call, complain, cause trouble... make new laws that cause even more trouble and eventually it gets out of hand. We create these monsters, and we loss ourselves in the shuffle of neighborhood battles. If something bothers you, you speak up, you communicate and you act like a human being and try to deal with it among ourselves.

The comment by the mayor of that city in Michigan "That's not what we want to see in our city!" That was a handful of people who made that law, and probably people with bigger eye sores in mind. The law became over powered by nit pickers, and eventually all homes had to be neatly mowed with hedges or people weren't welcome until they conformed! Big government has over stepped its bounds. :bun

It is so ironic- during the Depression the government was publishing all kinds of propaganda- it was considered patriotic and a necessity to have a few chickens in the backyard, and to grow some food. Now, it is not allowed. Ugh!! My heart goes out to that couple- I hope they can fight this ridiculous problem!
