The Garlic is Taking Off-- It Must Almost Be Spring!

We had such warm, dry weather last fall so I was late planting my garlic, not getting it in the ground until November 21st. For the first time I ordered a couple of early cultivars, Thai Purple and Shandong. They suggest that the early garlics aren't necessarily as tasty as the later ones, however being able to harvest fresh garlic earlier is supposed to compensate for this. I am surprised to see how much top growth they have put on in just a few weeks compared to the main season garlic. If you look very closely a few shoots of 'Japanese' and 'Silverwhite' appear in the background-- but they are barely breaking through the soil. The early cultivars are about 5-6" tall already.

i'm not sure where you are located or if that matters much or not. for here it wouldn't be unusual for garlic to pop and start growing during the kind of weather we've been having (warmer and some rains), which means when it gets really cold again then it may freeze and die back some until warm weather returns again later.

if you can, please give a general location in your profile so we don't have to guess the context.

Indeed, a Pacific Northwest climate. We had snow on the ground for 2 weeks in December, and these garlic have just taken off running after that. It is not unusual to have really cold weather here in February too; typically the garlic doesn't seem phased by it though.

Thanks for the note regarding adding my location to my signature as well. Not sure why it is not appearing, as I double checked and it is showing on my account.

I just checked it @Branching Out and you have South Western B.C. in your 'signature', but to get your location in with your picture and name in the rectangle (don't know the name of that, maybe your 'profile box' next to your posts) you have to go into 'account details' which is right next to 'signature' - when you click you name above in the top right. There is a location box in there, and if you add the info into that space it will appear in your box.

I feel so great to be able to explain that, because my competency with computer anything typically amounts to knowledge of where the 'on' button is.

if you have it in Home -> Your Account -> Settings -> Location it should be showing up.

Way to go Heirloomgal for explaining how to update this. Like you, computers are just not my thing. I followed the daisy chain that you suggested, found the 'location' option and have filled in that box. Hopefully it will display under my avatar.

I, too, have garlic up, even though I mulched all of my 3 kinds of garlic before winter.
They are confused, but will go and hide if it gets nippy again.

When I checked on the garlic patch today I noticed that everything was looking good,with the exception of one plant was stunted and curled. I am very much wishing to avoid having any garlic disease, so I rogued it out as a precaution.

My garlic is up, too. So are so Spring bulbs. I figure they'll be ok. This happens to my bulbs every year that has a warm spell. 62 degrees F predicted for next Wednesday.
