The contestants....

1. Cherokee Purple
2. Roma
3. Russian Purple Plum
4. Climbing Tomato (no clue actual variety..traded for these and they were labeled "climbing tomato")

Now #2, being a paste tomato, was at a disadvantage. It did come in last in the taste test, but still tasted far superior to a store-bought tomato.

#1 was a tasty variety and so was #3. The purple plums have a bit of a tang to them and the cherokee purple is a milder tomato. Is one better than the other? Maybe a slight edge to the purple plum just because we like tangy around here.

The clear winner was the climbing tomato! I was grumbling about how much room the plants took up for such a small number of tomatoes but I take back every bad thing I said.

The flavor was AMAZING! Not too seedy and great texture. Intense, sweet tomato flavor. Both hubby and I flipped when we bit in to it. Nice and juicy without being mushy.

Now the problem is what is the real name of this "climbing tomato"?

I'd be saving some seed from those climbing tomatoes to share around with everyone who didn't get to taste them. :)

Hee hee hee.

Seeds are being saved as we speak. Just have to remember to save more before inhaling the next one that ripens.

I looked at the Trip L and I don't think that is what I have. It is not nearly as productive as a Trip L climbing tomato is supposed to be and the tomatoes are NOT 6" across. More like 4". The vines are about 6'. That could be the spot I put them in though. Plus the tomatoes are a bit more pink than red.

"There appear to be several varieties, laying claim to this famous name. Their claim is their ability to grow vines to 15 feet by seasons end. Each plant can produce tons of fruits (all are some form of beefsteak.), some of them reaching 1lb or more! Fruits are mild-flavored, sweet, rich and meaty with few seeds. Ind. 75-85 days Examples are: 1) Climbing Pink..regular leaf, pink 4-6oz, good yield, great flavor. 2) Climbing Trip-L-Crop Pink..large 12oz beefsteaks, long season production, fruits have 12 seed cavities, flesh is sweet, texture is succulent to creamy. Reg. leaf. 3) Climbing Trip-L-Crop Burgessobtained from S. S. Ex. Large pink beefsteaks on tall vines. 4) Climbing Trip-L-Crop (Red) ..largest of all, with fruits reaching 2 lbs, vermillion red. 5) Trip-L-Crop..Potato-leafed plants bearing pink flattened globes of 10-12oz (5 x 3.5) 6) Pink ClimberPotato-leafed, large seeded, 10-16oz pink fruits.from Rosella Richardson."
