The new Cane Sisters

Well, as it worked out I came home with 4 new chicks. It was so cool there yesterday that one of them became nearly lifeless before we even got home. I tucked her in my shirt to warm her back up the rest of the way home and gave her sugar water as soon as we got settled, but she died shortly after arriving. The other 3 zipped around on a sugar-water high the whole afternoon and are doing well. I won't officially name them till everyone has made it through the first week - but here they are:

easter-egger / dorking
5 toes and fluffy cheeks

easter-egger
feathered legs and what seems to be a bit of a cool blue/gray color

easter-egger / blue laced red wynadotte
hopefully will develop blue edges on all her main (red) feathers

I'm hoping to get blue eggs from the first 2 and maybe green or olive from the last one. But for now - and for the next 6 months - I'll just be enjoying watching them grow.

baby chicks are the most wonderful. so far my buff has three. one of my other hens killed one before it was hatched. it was fully formed. I don't know if it was accidental or what - but she won't get that opportunity again. the coop is off limits to everybody (except for sleeping) until mom comes off her nest with her kids. the girls are just going to have to figure a different place to lay those eggs for a few days.

It's rough when you lose any. Unfortunately it happens whenever you deal with living animals.

Those should all feather out nicely. They are going to be a little bit beyond pretty. Here's hoping they are all female.

That's too bad about the little one you lost, but good that the other three are lively.

They're awfully cute! I'm going to try for an easter egger in my next batch, hopefully I can find some pullets on the point of lay, or get some fertile eggs next time my banty goes broody.

Cute chicks. Putting one in your shirt reminds me of when I raised rabbits. I'd find a half frozen baby out on the wire and I'd put it in my bra, warm it on one side, then turn it over and warm the other side. When it came back to life, back in the nest it went! Sorry your baby didn't make it. That is the down side to animals. They all don't make it. But the ones that do, light up our lives.

Thanks everyone, I'm already in LOVE with them
And guess what??? Sunday I went in the big coop to check the feeder and gather eggs and Sola, one of the speckled sussex was in the nest box. No big deal, someone is almost always in there. I just let her be and decided to get the eggs in the evening. When I went back - about 8:30 she was STILL THERE! I pulled out all but one of Candy's dark brown eggs and one each of the Jersey girls' eggs and left her sitting. So... I just might have a broody! Doesn't it just figure that I make a 2hour round trip, pay $20 for chicks (and loose one) and the VERY NEXT DAY one of my hens decides that she wants to raise babies? For FREE!
