The "experimental" garden this year is doing ok. It's an experiment because we finally made a dedicated spot for veggies in the yard and I am trying to figure out how to fit everything we want to grow now. The squash is producing now, (zuchinni, yellowneck, pattypan) the bush greenbeans are flowering, there are lots of green tomatoes in spite of the too late heavy pruning I did, (huge learning curve there!) carrots are plugging along, my single brocolli plant was dinner last nite, the jalapeno has lots of peppers on it, I have collected seed from the red lettuce and am about to plant brocolli and lettuces for fall. I hope I feel good enough to can all the beans and tomatoes I get this month!
The really good news is, we processed all the meaties and have 30 birds between 5 and 6 lb in the freezers now. They taste fantastic!

What I learned this year is that I still have SO much to learn!

That looks fabulous! Good for you, on the meaties. I definitely want to try that. I always tell Dh the garden- is just an experiment. Whatever plans you have, can easily change- depending on what mother nature has in mind! I learned the most wonderful trick here, about canning tomatoes. If you don't feel like doing them, the minute they are ready....pop them in the freezer, and use them when you are ready. This can give you a bigger batch- and as the tomatoes thaw, the skin slips right off. (Thanks Patwithchickens.) Enjoy your beautiful garden- and your tasty harvest!

haha, I was expecting a more complicated reason. Thanks.

I have all of my plants in planters, much smaller than your boxes. I was told that keeping veggie plants in planters like that, allows heat (especially here in TX) to get to the roots and stunts their growth. Is that true? Did you experience any problems like that in your boxes?

We dont have the extreme heat here that you get in Texas, but I do have to water them more in the winter than stuff in the ground, because we are on the desert and they dry out faster and can freeze if I don't, in our -25 degree occassional winter cold blasts!
