Crime has been really rising in Washington. My husband and I are thinking of moving somewhere with a lower crime rate. All of us as a family took a map of the US and put an "x" on any stats we did not want to live in. The prime areas we've narrowed down to are currently North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia and Kentucky off the top of my head. They're closeish to my family, close to a friend of his, and per my son, it is not Nevada.

If you live, or have ever lived in these areas, what's the growing like? We're looking at acreage so I can have a BIG garden.

Have experience in the piedmont of NC. Which county/township are you looking at? I may or may not know something about it.

My folks retired by Lake Monroe. Would not recommend it as county reports a 90% government aid population. Locals are one step above “Deliverance”. Realities are all crooks-the stories I could tell......

Out of state people are “sheep to be sheared.”.

Never lived in any of those states. I know y’all will make the right decision.
Thanks! If we don't like it we can always move back or elsewhere. I think it will be okay.

At this point we haven't narrowed it down to a county. We're looking at any house with at least an acre in that area, and looking to see what the jobs are.

I had to look up Lake Monroe as I'm unfamiliar with it. All I could fine was Indiana for that one.

Let me know If you narrow down your search in NC, it's dicey in many areas.

I think its dicey in all areas now. Being older and less bold, I'm continually SHOCKED by behavior of humans nowadays. Idiots on airplanes, idiots ignoring Police people, rude, inconsiderate, belligerent, hateful, etc etc etc.

I'm going out of my normal way (in a positive move) to be nice to all people. Thank them for a great job (Medicare Advantage plan lady, HVAC phone person, Doc's office staff, colonoscopy nurses) and tell them they did great!

Crime and homeless in Vancouver is the same as it was in Medford, but way less than Portland or San Jose.

edited to add: Stay away from intra and inter state thoroughfares. Crime likes to travel along those highways. Jackson County and Josephine County in OR have a task force to watch I5 and to pull over anyone, really anyone, looking for criminals and crime rings. Its amazing how many have been nabbed!!

Fully agree+1
I guess, I will never be able to go back to live in the big cities. I feel comfortable living with animals, plants, and not-too-many but nice people.

I remember a guy in Medford I'd see often when I was growing up. He slept under a downtown bridge over Bear Creek. Pass him on a sidewalk when I happened to be downtown, usually with Mom. I saw him drunk only one time ... he always wore a black fedora. There were a couple other guys, we called them hobos ... I'd look for the guy in the fedora every time I went back to Medford ... missed seeing him.

Here, I have seen a couple of guys in different neighborhoods where I happen to pass somewhat frequently, see them time and again. One guy, I thought was likely Native American, always by himself. Years! He aged and finally disappeared. Another seemed to be a young guy. I saw him again last Summer - he has nearly white hair.

One person was a Native American that I met on the job. He was from Alaska and came down south to be out of the cold. Got to know him a little bit because he was often around where I had to show up. A neighbor! Sorta. Altho older, he looked a good deal better the last time I saw him and had something of a part-time job. He had an apartment, same neighborhood. He might have been one of the lucky ones. He had finished high school, he said, even attended college classes. I had talked to him about museum work and he had taken a class related to that.

Life is sometimes a struggle and letting things slide, losing self-respect - life becomes worse, too often.

It's true, that every swing of an axe injures a tree. Up until the point of the very last swing of the axe. When the tree falls, it falls fast. So it's wise to ensure you're safely out of its path you're when the tree does fall. In the same breath... If the axe stops swinging and the tree is not injured to severely. The tree will eventually heal of it's wounds and continue to grow and flourish.

In this analogy, the tree and axe can be substituted to apply to other areas of life.
