For the past 3 years Ive been growing these tomatoes and each year I am more impressed with them.
History on the tomato :
Its said that the Campbell's Co. (later becoming the Campbell Soup Co.) bred this tomato and named the tomato after Dr. John Thompson Dorrance who developed there condensed soups line. The Dr. John Thompson Dorrance tomato or JTD for short has the Greater Baltimore tomato in its linage and along with the Marglobe the JTD is a parent stock to the Rutger tomato.
Description of tomato:
Tomatoes are a open-pollinated, commercial type heirloom tomato that is indeterminate in growth and takes around 85 days to maturity.
The JTD produces a red fruit that is a slightly flattened globe shape, averages around 10 to 12 ounces and can be used fresh or for canning.
Plants have a large regular tomato leaf, can reach on the average 6 to 8 feet tall and should be planted 36 to 38 inches apart.
Here is a look at my JTD's
The tomatoes are around 11 days out of the ground in this picture and getting its first transplant.
The tomatoes around 16 days out of the ground in this picture and on there second transplant. They grew out of the 4 inch net pot fast.
After transplanting into 5 inch peat pots.
And today 19 days out of the ground.
The seed starting mix that I use to start my seed in is:
3 parts Roots Organics - Microgreens
2 parts General Organics - Ancient Forest Alaska Humus
1 part Unco Industries - Worm Castings
The soilless mix transplanted into is:
Roots Organic - Micro-Greens
General Organics - Ancient Forest Alaska Humus
Unco Industries - Worm Castings
Perlite
Down To Earth - Alfalfa Meal
Down To Earth - Azomite
Roots Organics - Oregonisum XL
Roots Organics - Essential Earth
Rooted seedling feedings were:
2.5ml Bio Thrive
1ml CaMg
2.5ml Bio Root
1ml Bio Weed
2.5ml Bio Marine
2.5ml Diamond Black
The above amendments were added to 1qt of distilled water.
