One day my potatoes started struggling... a couple weeks later they were all flopped over yellow/brown/black and SQUISH! They never flowered like I'm used to, so I was convinced they had Verm wilt, maybe they did? Either way, wasn't happy... thought all was wasted. :hit

Stuck my hand in the dirt to pull the sad dead sticks and ended up pulling out a HUGE spud!

Stuck the shovel in and turned the soil and they just started pouring out!

Here's hubby and DD putting all the potatoes we pulled in a bag. Had just over 17 lbs from a 8'x4' raised bed, a mix of red potatoes and yukon gold. Maybe they should have done better? Who cares, I'm happy!

Excellent V! Boy, that soil looks nice and rich. :thumbsup
There are still lots of clumps of clay throughout... but we brought some soil in for those beds, and I've been adding compost regularly. Especially since I was loading it on top of those spud plants while they were growing.

I did notice, these are some of the biggest potatoes I've ever pulled out of the ground before!!!

Potatoes are fun and you've been able to share that, V!

The last few years, I've been digging out the bed while digging the spuds, it's kind of like sneaking up on 'em! What is underground begins to show up slowly as the soil falls way from the tubers, a shovelful at a time.

There's quite a bit more work to it like that so I only go a few feet & a few plants into the bed at a time. Then, the basket of spuds is carried home. I'll be out there again on another day.

I mean, there's no reason to turn it into a job, or anything ;).

I dunno if our potatoes did very well... LOL They were growing like crazy inside in it's little vinegar tub, and then when I transplanted them into the big bag and put the dirt on it, it growed for a little while and then it died. :/

Maybe I should go out there and see if we have any spuds as well!
