My son wanted to plant tomatoes last year but had no yard so I told him to plant them in 5 gallon buckets. So I gave him some heirloom Russian tomato seeds and he successfully grew two tomato plants, they were very full and green and looked very healthy but never produced any tomatoes, can anyone give me a hint at why this happened? I'm thinking of growing in buckets also but I'm afraid the same thing will happen... :/

Did they have flowers?

If they never even set flowers....too much fertilizer perhaps?

Some don't do very well in pots. Try a cherry type tomato.

What type of fertilizer did he use?
It sound like either he may have used a Lawn Type fertilizer which is high in Nitrogen and low in Phosphate and Potassium or Tomato Blossom Drop.

Did they set flower?

He had no flowers and just used top soil and miracle grow potting soil.

Interesting, how many months were the plants alive? In the potted ones on my balcony, I just use pure miracle grow soil that was already used once from seed starting/left overs. They usually start to set flowers at about 2 months old or so. If the soil is too rich, they might not want to set flowers. Starve and root bind a tomato in a 4 inch pot and it'll flower in about 6 weeks.
