I have a couple who are senior citizens, that drive all the way up from the bronx for grooming. They had a bad experience at local grooming shop and now drive a hour round trip to me. I give them a very large senior citizen discount. Today hubby gave me 12 tomato plants he started from seed. 6 where labeled salad and 6 cooking. i asked him what varieties they where,he gave me a look and said salad for eating in sandwiches and salads and cooking for sauce!!

Dad would have probably had the same type of answers if someone asked him what varieties he grew. His varieties were red, yellow, orange, and, shortly before I left home after high school, a purple that got really big. And, of course, a few tommy toes. Tommy toes might be red, yellow, or orange but I don't recall seeing any purple.

What a nice gesture. :) I'd imagine the cooking tomatoes would be something like Romas. Hard to tell with the "salad" type, but probably a big, red slicer if he said he eats them on sandwiches. Probably something he saved seed from for many years, so long ago he has forgotten the name.

My neighbor is in her 70's and she is my gardening buddy. She gave me an unidentified heirloom tomato plant a couple years ago that turned out to make a big, delicious, yellow tomato and I liked it so well that I saved seed even though I didn't know what it was at the time. Finally figured out it was most likely a Kellogg's Breakfast after growing some side by side.

Maybe we can make a contest out of this and try to identify your tomatoes! ;)

Maybe you can plied a little more info. from him every time he comes in? Such as how long he's been saving the seed? What size they get? color, etc. Hopefully once they produce for you, you might be able to determine what they are. Do you have room for that many plants?

I would have to plant some just because. Once bought and planted a variety called JOHN because John gave them the seeds to start. Didn't again but interesting.

Is plant them & see if you enjoy them. THEN we can worry about getting an ID for them. They might have little flavor or maybe the best things you've ever had.
