I grew Ukrainian Blacks this year Steve. I always get some tomatoes from a local person that sells organic open-pollinated tomato plants. Ukrainian Blacks and Carbon were my experiments this year.

Maybe they would work for you but I did not like them at all. My climate is not like the Ukraine.

They were small and elongated, which I OK, but not prolific at all. They were early which would be nice for you. I know that a black usually ripens on the bottom and the top remains green, but these went off real fast. I dont think I waited too long to get them. The bottoms were prone to rot before they even turned color. The skin was just covered with blemishes. I dont know what caused that. None of my other tomatoes had it. It was not blossom end rot.

I know all gardening is local and you need to find a variety that suits your location, but I cant recommend those at all.

I am afraid I can't get away with growing black tomatoes anyway, RidgeRunner. Can't get away with making DW happy with them, at least. If she likes a tomato - it is a win-win. I am very easy to please and so flavor isn't a big deal, one way or another.

DW wanted to have Black Cherries one year - the picture. I knew she wouldn't like the more pronounced flavor - I was right. She was wrong . See, it helps to think of things that way rather than just be a push-over tomato grower.

I guess I'd like to try Black Krim. It is very popular and must do well for most everyone. The "Krim" is "Crimean." Still, there are now plenty of reds, pinks, yellows, large and small to try from this part of the world! Romania may be even a closer climate match for here. I also feel that Mediterranean varieties should really work but they have to be early types.

I know you have these:

Notice "History Russian commercial variety." Ain't that something?! They did that with their "Black Ethiopian," too. It was originally made available as coming from the Ukraine, not Africa!

Steve - DH and I grew *Black Krim* this summer. They where med. size, dark purple/red at bottom with shoulders that remained green. They did tend to crack around the tops. We liked the flavor o.k. (But liked the *Mortgage Lifter* better.) DH is attempting to save some seed from the 4 varieties we grew.

I grew Japanese Black Trifele again this summer. First time was year before last and I remember liking them. This year they were prolific, but the bottoms looked as if they had gotten frosted ( they didn't ) and the flavor wasn't as good as I thought it should be.

Not sure I'll grow them again.

Maybe I'm not missing anything with the "blacks" :/.

I just got a little crazy and clicked on Tatiana's "Hybrid Tomatoes." They are 4th down on Tomatoes by Origin.

Yep, lots of hybrids and you can find something about them and where to buy the seed. But! There are also the intentional crosses of heirlooms! Those are folks having fun :p! I gotta a little lost in Sungold X Mom's but I'm sure that there is intense effort going into stabilizing that cross!

My favorite tomato of any color is Black Sea Man. My seed didn't germinate this year so I don't have any, but past years have shown that they are delicious. Gypsy shared one with me and declared them the best tomato she's ever tasted. I actually had to hide them to keep her from eating them all.

I remember discussion last spring about that Black sea Man, Red. If I can remember when the time comes to order seed I'd like to try it.
Since our climates are sorta similar maybe it will give me some success.

Yep, listed with the Russians.

Those folks must like black tomatoes! There are 9 with "black" as the 1st word in the name. They don't even include "Black Krim" with the Russian tomatoes. I believe that is because they are Ukrainian.

I clicked on Blue Fruit - 1st thing it says is "black". Sure is a pretty tomato . . .

That is a pretty one Steve. I mistakenly thought you said Blue Beauty and went there, another pretty one! :)
But I would have named it Pretty Plump Plum or something like that if I was in charge of those kinds of things...

I don't get the color references with tomatoes at all, blue? black?
