According to this chart, it's time to plant cantelopes....so I would imagine it's alright for any melons....given their maturity date will allow them to develope before the first frost.

Thanks boggy for replying! ;)

I have the watermelon and other melon seeds soaking now, they should hopefully be planted tomorrow. You know how this year has been going, one day rainy and cool the next sunny and warm. I didnt want the melon seeds to rot in the soil if it was too cool, thats why I waited a little.

It sure has been a crazy year, so far.....even down here in the deep south (we had the first snow, that actually "stuck", in over 37 years). But that's nothing to what you gardeners close to the Canadian border have been dealing with. Good luck.

Pick something with a short enough season to fit into what's left of yours (find out your first frost date and how many days you have left until that). I grew Athena canteloupes in zone 6 here last year and they matured at 75 days. If what you're planting fits comfortably within your growing season, no worries. Melons will sprout fast enough if the soil temps are warm enough. I start mine indoors for a little jump on the season, but it's really not necessary.

You should be good to go and get plenty of seed. It took me about a month to go from seed to flower. That should be just perfect for August melons for you! :D

Just wanted to ask if it was too late to plant melon seeds in zone 6? I found this article about soaking melon seeds before planting, they say it seems to help get them germinating much faster.

I am in zone 6 and I haven't planted melons yet. I put cucumber out reluctantly on the 15th but I had already started them indoors so they were transplants. I am planting them Memorial Day weekend. They like hotter temps to germinate and if you plant them too early they won't. I am going to plant summer squash and zuchinni then too.

I haven't decide when I am planting pumpkin and winter squash, it didn't do well last year so I am thinking about planting it earily to give it more time this year.

;) Thanks guys so much for all your help, i appreciate it! I'm going to keep the planted melon seeds in the greenhouse, plenty warm in there to germinate well.

Thanks Again!
