We have a wild asparagus all by his lonesome out on the boundary between our wheat field and the cow pasture. He is in a rock pile, and there are no others anywhere around. Can he be transplanted to the yard, or will I be killing this plant that DH says has been there all his life if I do that? I hate a mile walk each day just for a few spears - altho it is still better than having to get to the ditches before the mail lady does lol.

I think you could try it, but not until next winter/early early spring. It needs to be dormant before you try to move it. You would have to mark where it is so you would know where to dig and it probably has some really extensive and deep roots that you want to avoid cutting as much as possible. That means digging out a pretty big root ball and moving some rocks since he is in a rock pile. Then you have to move it a mile? Hope you can drive a truck or tractor out to it. Good luck! :)

I would. But I'd do it very carefully and I'd do it now. Let the last few spears go and let them go to seed in whatever garden area you plan to keep it in and see how it does next year. Good luck!

I used to get it by the armload along the river. Then, I found out that the heavy metal contamination was so high along the stream banks that we really shouldn't do that . . .

Fifty years ago I knew everything. Now I know nothing. Learning anything has been a progressive discovery of how ignorant I am and will always be.

Will Durant said something like that but the lead in my blood has made me forget exactly what it was.

It is so cold here that it hasnt even begun putting out spears, yes it is on the field road so we can drive right up to it. I am going to brave the gawd awful spiders and go for it!
