I had bad germination with sunflowers and squash. Empty shells on top of the soil looked like a critter was carefully eating the interior of the seeds. So I tried something different. I sprouted the seeds of both and planted them when they were well sprouted and have had to water like crazy to keep them moist. I have been rewarded with new squash seedlings and many sunflower seedlings. I don't know if it was a deterrent or if the cats took care of the thief's. I think I still have time for the squash to mature and am sure the sunflowers will give a late season show. Luckily I had some early indoor starts that survived the cucumber beetle onslaught. So I will get some squash pretty soon-just not the usual quantities. Too hot out-time for a siesta.

That sounds like a great idea! I hope your squash makes for you. I got 36 pounds until the borers bored the vines to death! I replanted and they are having their first male blooms now. :fl May the squash Genie bless you with lots and lots of squash!
