has anyone seen commercial where customers are asked if they want tomatoes skinned with steam or lye? Like it, love it, hate it?

Does it affect which brand you will purchase? Obviously it didn't me as I can't remember the brand they were promoting--I am old and senile..

I know what commercial you're talking about but I can't remember the product either. I think it's Hunts? I don't pay attention to commercials. They really don't influence me in what I buy.

Hmmm....we don't get any of them there fancy commercials. We just have antennae tv.
I mute all commercials anyway and I can't read lips, although I use muted commercials for training. So far not much success. Except for the obvious ones.
Did you know that advertisers are on to us muters and are now writing everything in large print across the screen? If they don't knock it off I will have to become illiterate as well as mute.

Oh, sorry Seed, did you ask us a question? I'm right behind you on the senile train....:D

Hadn't seen the commercial (don't get much time to watch tv here either), but Googling it does turn up lots of info explaining that it is commonly how they are processed. Learn something new every day! :\

I have bought lye for making soap (haven't gotten to that yet), and from what I'm told, it will peel your skin too.

I wonder how they neutralize it afterwards?

That's what they use to make hominy as well, so hominy grits are also made in that way.

Here's an article on the lye and steaming: http://www.agriculture.purdue.edu/aganswers/story.asp?storyID=4018

We don't have TV, so don't see commercials, but it really makes no difference to me about the process...mostly we eat our own tomatoes here, but we do buy tomato products as spaghetti sauce, ketchup, etc. when needed and when I run out of our canned sauces.

As we country folk are pretty familiar with lye and its various uses, so it doesn't concern me much. My granny used to wash her dishes in lye soap and then feed the water to her pigs and chickens.

In the process of making soap, the lye is chemically changed and neutralized though.

That is why it is not poisonous or will not burn to have your mouth washed out with soap. :D My parents never used that one, but I did lick a bar once out of curiosity. LOL

Wish I could say the same, I remember like it was yesterday and not 3rd grade. My mom and I where fighting I used the F word to her, she dragged me by my hair to the kitchen sink. She took a bar of soap and grated it over my teeth. For 2 days no matter how many times I brushed my teeth I tasted soap. The worst part was the shame I felt when she told all her friends. Today that would mostly likey be child abuse, heck dragging a kid by his hair would. Back then nobody she told thought it wrong. From that day on I was very carefull what words I said to her.
