Just thought I'd share some photos I took of my betta today. He's a pretty cool fish. I've already got him trained to do 2 tricks, and he's working on his third one. He's pretty smart!
He bites a target, and can swim into and out of a cup. I'm working on getting him to jump out of the water, but we only started today and he was already stuffed, so not very motivated to work.
That seems to be one fantastic fish in fine fettle for your family, @AMKuska!
I would think twice about teaching him to jump out of his home. I've spent years trying to train my fish to stay in the water -- although mine were'n air breathers and the result is a slow and dreadful death.
I'd never thought of a pet fish being smart enough to learn tricks (other than coming for food). I guess I'll never get a beta. First rule of training is to know more than the animal you're training and I'm not sure I'd make it.
Hmm, that's a good point. I lost one of my thailand imports when she jumped out of the water. I'd forgotten about that. I think I'll still teach him jump, but after I've invested in a proper tank with a lid.
Edited to add: Thank you so much for saying something @Smart Red . Left the keyboard and thought about what it would mean if he did jump out...got a book over the top of that bowl with a crack for air. Eep!
He sure is pretty. Most bettas I have had experience with don't seem to stay active very long. Maybe with you giving him cues and stimulation, it will keep him in best form.
@solucky, inactivity is usually a sign they are too cold. I have repticord underneath a towel that keeps the bowl fairly warm. Bettas are tropical fish and don't do well at room temperature
I had a goldfish that I bought at Gemco for like 99 cents. I had Biddie for over 10 years. During the first 3 years I had him, he'd jump outa the tank onto the orange shag carpet in my studio apt. Talking about finding him and then scooping him back into the water! It was hard!
