I could almost see the dirt and then- 2 more feet of snow!!!! So discouraging. I am still praying for an early spring- but I don't think I should get my hopes up...24 days and counting!
Same thing here lesa, just when the last snowstorm has melted a new one is here. We got near 18" here, with more on the way and this snowstorm isn't going to stop until Saturday it started snowing yesterday and wouldn't stop. This winter has been really crazy. Soon the spring flowers will bloom, i hope . You just need to have some faith i'm sure Spring will finally arrive soon.
All my horses and my outside cats and my inside dogs are beginning to shed. I'm seeing cardinals (male and female), and hearing spring birds, and seeing "wick" on my bushes. Even with 1/2 our snow left and ice cover, spring is JUST around the corner!!
Hopefully this will be the last major round of winter weather! We are getting some crazy wind up here today and the eastern mountainous counties of WV are supposed to get another 12" of snow... I'm lucky, they're only calling for 1-3" here. But it is so cold!
I've seen the bluebirds back and heard the morning birds singing lately. The buds are forming on my lilac and fruit trees. So happy that the days are finally getting longer! It happens so fast doesn't it? I'm sure it will be 20 degrees here one day then *poof* 60 the next, and spring will be upon us, so I'm trying to get all my ducks in a row and be ready to plant peas and such just as soon as I see bare ground.
I decided to put in a few raised beds for my lettuce, peas, greens, etc this year so that I can get going without having to wait on all this red clay to dry out or be thwarted by an extra rainy spring (like last year).
I am anxiously awaiting, the "poof" part, Journey!! I guess the waiting is what makes spring so magical...Here's wishing all of us a lot of sunny days!!!!
.......I just can't imagine having to deal with that kind of weather. I've stopped grumbling about a little bit of frost and temps in the 40's and 50's, that's for sure.
It is gradually getting warmer here -- 5*Celsius yesterday -- no snow in our area, just a lot of rain. Even my usually well-drained soil is sodden. The spaces between the raised beds are like mud-slides. I think I will risk putting my peas & broad beans in soon along with some garlic.
In Scotland they are still covered in deep snow & have thousands of homes without electricity. So many families have lost their roofs because of the weight of snow......... this is certainly a rare winter as we don't hear about that happening here.
I can definitely feel spring in the air now. I even have those miniature blue Iris coming in to bloom & snowdrops poking through. Unfortunately a lot of shrubs & perennials have died or been severely damaged by the extreme cold. It will be interesting to see if any of them re-sprout from the roots or lower stems.....
I feel for you all who live in colder zones than mine & who are more isolated. At least we are lucky enough to be able to communicate with each other nowadays -- just think what it was like in the 'old days' when you didn't see anyone outside your immediate family for months. When I worked up in Edmonton, Alberta I read a lot of old accounts collected from women who lived on farms up there & they were desperate. I have never forgotten them.......!
So let us all look forward >>>>>>>> :coolsun & :bee :bee :bee :happy_flower & :tools
Here's some pics I took February 25th of last year. My toddler running around in a jogging suit, no need for a coat! And what's that I see--could it be a ray of sunshine? I think that is why this has been such a terribly long and insufferable winter. We've had what, maybe 3 days all winter where the sun came out? I need some Vitamin D!! Just hanging in there, knowing that winter CAN'T....LAST.....MUCH....LONGER!
ETA: I must confess--I haven't done my pruning yet on my apples and grapes. I am not thrilled to go out there right now! Feed the chickens, get the mail, hurry back inside before my cheeks get too windburned!
Yesterday was a rough day with all this snow. I just went out to feed my birds and shovel a bit then stay inside baking some Olive Bread and making dinner. A nice cup of tea or coffee sure does seem to melt the winter cold away. Would anyone like the recipe for the olive bread?
Now their looking at a possiblity for more snowstorms to come through for March, i have a feeling winter is going to stick around a little longer. Theirs even a storm that might come through for tues. to wed.
What are you going to do.
