Perhaps the admins might make a sticky based on this thread.....
What I want to do is to get a very extensive list of what varieties and species various seedhouses sell. What that means is that, if anyone's willing, pick up your catalogues (bulb, root, seed, doesn't matter which) and start listing. Thank you! :weight

If a person was to do it right, it'd be done using the full Trinomial Scientific names. Common names of species could be in a table of contents.

Fabaceae Phaseolus vulgaris, Bush, Green, stringless snap, Tendergreen, improved: R.H. Shumway's

The list would be huge!

If it was started with Thompson and Morgan's varieties, then Whatcom's, followed by Ferry Morse's, then Burpee's, then Baker Creek...Seed Saver's Exchange, Territorial, Bountiful Gardens, Richter's, Sustainable Seed, Southern Exposure, Chuck Wyatt's, Rheinhard Kraft's, Native Seed Search, Heritage Harvest, ...holy cats...just listing the seed companies would be a whole book!

Yes, what is definitely needed is a comprehensive list, continuously updated. It could have an appendix for varieties not easily available from places like the USDA, that seed bank near the north pole, private and University collections.

It would probably shock most people to know how many Sativa species of Peas there are, and that there are closely allied species of Pea most folks think are the same species.

The list would definitely be a multi volume encyclopedia, and if it also had even a very brief description for each, it'd be almost a library.

It would make a GREAT project for a person working on a Masters degree in something like Sustainable Small Farming Agriculture.
