The sticky part might be aphids- do you see any insects on the tree? Strange that it would bloom and then die? Sure someone else will chime in.

you may want to look up bacterial canker. i've had issues in the past on a couple of peach trees. most of the time it can be surgically cut out or affected branches cut off. you'll probably want to spray the tree after you do your clean up.

these links may help determine if it could be bacterial canker. have you been having wet weather over there lately?
this one may be closer to home for you since they are in the UK. http://www.orangepippintrees.co.uk/fruit-tree-problems/bacterial-canker

local universities and colleges may be your best resources for figuring out common fruit tree issues in your area. i live about 30 minutes from a local agricultural college but they don't seem to publish online a lot of their studies on local plant problems. so i've relied on much bigger agri universities for help.
