This vine is growing in an area we cleared last year. (Well, it does when I don't get up there with the box blade often enough!)

My first thought was, "Oh, no, kudzu! Help, all 20 acres will be covered by next week!!!" But looking at http://www.jjanthony.com/kudzu/blossoms.html the flowers don't match.

This has a cluster of purple flowers, not a stalk of them. Then you can see the seed head after the blossoms wither.

It does want to climb and wind itself around anything it gets ahold of though.

What is it?

I don't think it's kudzu. The leaves aren't lobed and the flowers don't seem typical of a legume at all. The seed cluster is also wrong.

Jacquemontia tamnifolia (smallflower morning glory) is it! Thanks ridgerunner.

The bees and butterflies *love* it, I might move some to a controlled area and let it grow.

It looks as though it might make a nice ground cover for an out of the way area but it also looks as though it could take over if you let it.
