My sister and her husband visited over the weekend. They have never lived in a rural area, and it is always fun to show them what I am up to. She is naturally squeamish. All I have to do is mention the frog that incubates its eggs on its back (then the baby frogs "emerge" from Mama's back when they hatch) to get her really grossed out. So I had fun showing her the chickens, the garden, the hummingbird feeder teeming with hummers, and the kombucha I am brewing. Some strangers from the area stopped by to admire and ask about the chicken house, while my sis was here. I have to admit, it is a great looking chicken house, designed by me and built by DH and DS. Most of my relatives think my way of life is strange, but interesting. However, they are slowly converting to healthier eating and being more conscious of food additives and processes. Yea!

FOOD is from a store, right??

This other stuff isn't really food. I mean, that cucumber is laying in the dirt . . !

How would you know when to eat it? I mean, unless somebody makes you pay $ for it - it must be, essentially, worthless.

And, it's green so it isn't as tho' it changes color when it's "ripe" like a watermelon. Oh, wait!

What's with that white cucumber over there? I don't know if I could ever bring myself to eat a white cucumber! And, if potatoes have eyes -- are they looking at us?!?

I live in the middle of New Orleans, and have chickens and a large veggie garden with lots of fruit trees. I've had friends turn down my fresh eggs, since they came out of the chickens' buts and not from a carton! Others couldn't understand why I want to grow veggies when I can just buy them from the store. That is, until they taste a homegrown cucumber or tomato. A very dear friend tried to grow a small veggie garden & she thought her soil was bad since it was full of earthworms!

My grandkids did pause a little when they were told the fresh milk was straight out of a cow--I could see their little brains working on that--but they were soon asking for more milk!

We've had a similar experience with family & friends. They typically think we're strange, but they ask a lot of questions, and everybody loves visiting our farm. We have several friends who come to our farm to escape the city.

One of my favorite things about living on a farm is bringing city folk here. They're always fascinated by (and sometimes afraid of) the chickens and bees, and they're truely interested in how things work around here.

I grew up on a dairy farm and we used to take city kids in. The first time they saw cows being milked they balked at drinking it so my mother started putting the milk on the table in milk bottles instead of a pitcher. The kids would demand milk out of the bottles because that's where milk "belonged". To their minds getting it from a cow was unnatural.

Ahhh so the ignorance of American children is not new.

The stories related in this thread made me laugh a little, and smile a lot.

I'm not certain, but it seems, So Lucky, as though you find it a little bit fun making your sister squirm?
But that's what siblings are for, right? :D
