Volunteer Work

Since September I have been off on Fridays and find I have a little extra time so I sent an email to a local grower offering to do volunteer work for her. She is 63 and works very hard. I was kind of bummed out since I hadn't heard from her since before Christmas. I decided to send another one and I heard from her! Yesterday, I helped her weed around her tables for about 4 hrs. I just want to learn how she grows all those veggies that she sells at the farmer's markets and to help someone out. My back was a little "achey" when we finished but I had so much fun working and chatting along side her. She said that she hadn't even felt like starting work but that I had really encouraged and motivated her.

She was so grateful and kept telling me so and that I could have any veggies plants I wanted all season long. I've thought off starting my own seeds but why bother? I do much better with plants anyway.

I'm gonna help her out Monday afternoon since I'm off. There are tomatoe plants to pull and weeding around the raised beds. She grows 60 different heirlooms. I think it's a great arrangement since she won't be needing me every Friday.

It was so rewarding for me to help someone out and it kept me from eating all those snacks in the afternoon which caused me to gain those 5 pounds! Yea!!!

Thistle, I told you I needed weeds to pull! I even offered to help Vfem!

Mary what a nice idea. Sounds like even though you're volunteering, you'll be getting plenty in return, like plants and great ideas! Kudos to you!!

Mary, what a fantastic idea! It's all win-win for you! You have a new friendship, get new plants, and you can pick her brain freely! Oh, and lose weight too! What could be better? I'll bet you're the first person to offer free weeding labor to her. She probably didn't get back to you right away because she was so stunned that someone would volunteer!

I have dibs on you next! Please be available around late April, but I'll get back to you with more specifics when the snow is gone.

Wow, Mary, you may have really opened up the path for some exciting gardening ahead. (And a good friendship) Don't you just love it when those spur of the moment ideas blossom like this?
