Great question!

Usually what we do is see if there is a lot of interest in a topic and if it is demarcated enough from other sections, we'll create a section for the topic and move any relevant threads into it. This has been a great process for identifying where there is room for a new section or sub-section of the forum.

We'll keep an eye out for "irrigation" topics and see if there's enough discussion to warrant a new section.

In the interim, go ahead and start a new irrigation thread in a section that is most relevant (example, if it's about watering trees, in the trees section, etc.) or in the more general sections.

I'm in!!!! We are planning on an orchard this fall and I'm NOT holding a water hose 3 hours a day.

We have 8 acres, 2 water faucets, 1 on the front of the house, 1 on the back. Watering ANYTHING requires linking hoses and dragging them around. I carry water to the chickens in a bucket.
Please insert smiley sticking tongue out, and not the happy one either!

We are going to have to rent a trencher, run PVC and add more faucets. Then we'll lay irrigation pipe with fittings for each tree, probably do the same for the garden too.

What topic in the forum would be best to post irrigation in?

It will be fall before we can get started, it's in the hundreds and hot hot.

Bay I started out with 4 acres and 1 faucet. I did the run a under ground trench to garden shed for a faucet there, ( I didn't use trencher, I used nephew ) also added a faucet to other side of house, had a plumber do both jobs, not cheap but worth it. A garden without water is a dead garden

The under ground line to shed has a on/ off valve. I just turn water off then open faucet and let what ever comes out drain. I am taking a chance, my nephew made me buy a air compressor one of his friends was selling, said it would blow out all water out of line for winter. The 2 faucets on house i replaced with frost proof, don't have to turn off for winter anymore. The underground sprinkler the company that put it in winterizes it, i don't know what they do, I just get bill in mail for it.

@Nyboy, I still shut off my frost proof outside faucets each fall. We did have one freeze in the past and see no need to take a chance again despite the fact that they run two feet into the warm basement area.

I was expecting you to say you had to have your underground pipes blown out each fall. That is what I figured would need doing if I get water pipes run underground to those places I most often use water. Is your underground water piping new this spring or did blowing it out last fall work for you?

Under ground waterline is about 3 years old. I am sure it is much safer to have blown out, but I walk on dangerous side. I just let gravity drain out the water. This winter was brutal. temps where way below zero, it was fine this spring. Will my luck hold out, I did buy compressor to blow outline. Will get photos when up tomorrow.
