Is there a problem with starting watermelons and cantaloupes in the greenhouse and then after the last frost transplanting them in the garden? The reason I ask this is I've heard they don't like the roots to be disturbed. If this is the case, what's the best method of going about starting them in the greenhouse?

Yep, planting the seeds in peat pots is the easiest way.

With some practice it's possible to use the same pots as other things though. You just make sure when you remove it from the container that the rootball stays intact. It'll do that easier if is well loaded with roots, but not bound. A few loose roots are ok. The way you hold the pot is with a couple fingers on each side of the main stem, flat on the soil. A flip, a tap, and off with the pot. Have where it's going ready, tuck it in, a bit of carefully slow water, next. (<<<Has done many thousands of uppottings).

2 1/4" pot is a good size to use.

Kind of water-logged potting soil holds together fairly well and probably cuts down on the potential for shock.
