I have an heirloom melon called sugarlump (whiteflesh) which matures around 5-6 lbs. I know all of the standard ways of ckecking for ripeness but here's the twist. The side stem that holds the melon is 5-6 inches long and it has no tendril on any of the stems that are holding melons. Also, the bottom has a creamy yellow spot the size of a silver dollar-no larger.I have heard that the stem will crack half way between the main vine and the fruit. Help me ya'll!
