I have these coming up all over. They have fuzzy heart shaped leaves, the flower is a mottled white with purple and has a yellow throat. The stems are soft and break easily. The whole plant smells really strange, revolting actually when you crush it. Any ideas?

I should have known Steve would find it. You're awesome Steve! Thank you! I can't imagine eating any part of that stinky plant, but I'm glad to know what it is.

Steve read your post 1st, so he beat me to it. It is Devils Claw, WEED. (I identified it last year for SMD on her blog, so I never had to look it up this time around.) Nasty seedpods. Prettyflowers.

Here in the Panhandle, we call that Devil's Claw. Love the flowers, but really fuss when I have to get them out of the horses' tails. They can be pretty invasive.

Thank you. I've been a lifetime in the Intermountain West and have trouble remembering what I'm looking at each year.

The UTexas, Austin in a great site and TAMU is wonderful for agricultural info.

Even outsiders visit them regularly - just proved that ;).

The USDA Plant Database gives you "range." If you click on a state, it will show you why the state is included in the range.

yikes, kill it! ONE plant showed up, grew beautifully...the next year, everwhere. and the seed pods will spike through a flipflop. Random fact: related to okra, the seeds look identical. And, according to sources, is also edible at tiny pod size. But now I just search and destroy seedlings that are in everything.
