Since I'm over 65 I don't have to serve any more, but in South Louisiana I was called about every four years. I was only selected once and that trial, a drug dealer, was cancelled before it began, he pleaded. I never tried to get out of serving, just never had to be on a jury. It is a civic duty. Yeah, I always took plenty of reading material.

My brother served on a murder trial several years back. They let the guy off, they didn't want to as he was a scumbag but they really didn't have enough proof he was guilty of murder. That's getting pretty serious.

My wife once sat on a jury where somebody working for a city was illegally fired. That was another guy that had no socially or morally redeeming qualities but the arrogant good-old-boy city politicians thought following the law was not in their job description. That trial was not about whether he was illegally fired or not, that was already settled. The trial was about how big the penalty should be.

Then several years back a friend and coworker was picked for a Federal grand jury. He got to decide if there was enough evidence to bring certain people to trial. He never spoke of that experience, even after we had a few adult beverages. He wasn't supposed to and he just wouldn't.

If you are ever picked you'll get an inside seat to see how the system actually works and maybe why some juries decide the way they do. I'm kind of glad I never made it that far.

I was selected to go to federal grand jury. I was a person or 2 away from being selected for a gang murder. 2 well dress young men. I felt fortunate not to be selected. The next day I was selected for one of those internet stings for a guy setting up a sexual meeting with a 12 year old boy. I opted out-had to tell the judge why. Said I would try to be fair but that the crime was so abhorrent to me. So I was excused. In my mind I also knew no crime had actually occurred. I don't see them doing this locally any more. I guess intent is still a crime. Glad I did not have to decide.

I have been called 4 times and sat on juries twice. Both were for drugs.
Dh and Kid#1 have never been called. Kid#2 was getting a jury notice every year for about 3 years, and didn't get picked. They are only supposed to call every two years, but I guess they liked him. :D

Few times, I responded that spring was a bad time but I'd gladly do it at other times. They always let me out. When I did go,we waited about 1 hour to have the drug pusher plead out.

Judge would probably kick me out as I yell, burn him/her at stake.

Here you can postpone your date at least 1 time and select a convenient time.. I think they like teachers. My husband and I were selected like clock work. But not since retiring.

I was told (by a court official) that they go off the drivers license rolls.
But I don't understand why my son and I got called so much more often than my husband or other son. Just lucky that way I guess.
