This is what was sitting beside my computer last week - Calendulas & a few strawflowers that later opened a little more. The weather warmed after a dozen frosts and the plants came back and bloomed a little more :).

What do you think about calendulas? Do you grow them?

Great photo Steve...... I grow them as well, not as many this year. I use them in Potpourri (dried) and as a garnish and a little color in salads. I use them sometimes in smaller arrangements and as "filler" flowers along with Zinnias in bigger arrangements. Beautiful color on that bouquet.

I always forget about people using them for food . . .

The thrips love them, swarm over them, I spray them - then, the thought of calendulas as food just disappears from my mind.

The plants come back viciously if allowed to reseed. I'm very sure that some folks think of them as weeds. Well, I almost think of them as weeds ;). It takes certain amount of tolerance to put up with calendulas. I am always wondering whether I'm going to have them around another year - just go with the rototiller , or not. Actually, I deliberately start them in the greenhouse and set out where & how many I want.

Those are Radio Extras, by the way. They have that amazing "pumpkin orange" color!

I'm not sure of the variety name...this Calendula is one of the many colors I got as a mix of seeds from a lady in our Garden Club. The mix has all colors....cream, orange, yellow, almost white, bi-colors...etc. I plant seeds every year and almost always a few "surprises" pop up somewhere else in the garden.....I couldn't have planted them in better spots if I had tried. I would love to get some seeds from yours Steve if you have any you'd like to sell....(????) I love that color....Here's one of mine...

This is the first year I have grown calendulas, and I was pleased with their performance after they struggled as new seedlings. I am glad to read that they reseed easily. They were planted along the west side of the garden fence, with my oregano, yarrow and some minionette that I was disappointed with. My calendula was a strong yellow, and did bloom again after frosts, too.

Steve, I used to grow calendulas. But they reseeded to much and started taking over so I got rid of them.

I think they are beautiful, I've grown them before but nothing came back in the past year. I sure wish they would have as I didn't think to plant any.

So cheery!
