I went out to work in the garden today and my neighbor I have not seen all summer comes out. He looks good and seems to feel good, smoking a cigarette, and smoke coming towards me and I smell it when he says to me he is doing better since having COVID in June. His son got it and tested positive and he figured he might as well make his will out because if he got it he would be a goner but he tested negative and had all the symptoms and still does not have his taste back. He is going to start coming out now and he loves to talk and usually I stop working and stand and talk to him and enjoy talking myself, but I am not sure I believe it was that long ago he was sick, because I have not seen him anywhere and thought he was out of town. I was about 15 to 20 feet away. Would you want to keep your distance from somebody like this? I guess it would not be as bad if the smoke was not there to breathe. All I can think of is COVID germs coming out of his lungs into the smoke. Since he feels good, is he safe to be around? Not having his taste back bugs me. He is in his 70s, chain smoking, has had pneumonia a couple of years ago, looks like walking death, nose turns blue when he is outside in chilly weather, yet COVID did not put him in the hospital. I had a big day planned of weed pulling, laying cardboard down and spreading some compost, but now I about ready to just let this garden go until spring and deal with it then. I know I sound like a chicken.

i'd not like it simply because of the smoke let alone any other risks.

he may or may not have had it. some illnesses can mean people lose their sense of taste/smell for a while.

also it could have been a mild case and his body was able to fight it off.

if it was long enough ago then he's likely ok, but still i'd not want to deal with the smoke.

if you are going to smother an area you don't need to pull weeds, just stomp 'em down and put the cardboard layers over them, hold it down with some rocks or mulch and call it good until spring. :)

I guess since he is not symptom free, this is really not safe. I think I will try to work over in a corner for now where it is hard to see me and get that done. It is going to start getting hot again and I think that might be part of the reason I have not seen him out. He does not like hot weather or cold weather. I can get the compost dug out of the bins and have that ready to take to the garden. He does not bother me if I am in my yard, just when I am in the garden.

You are right and that will go fast if I do it that way. I will get the compost ready and this should go pretty quick.

I personally can't stand cigarette smoke. My neighbor's backyard bumps into my backyard. On the rare occasion that he's outside smoking, I have to go inside. I'm guessing we are at least 25 feet away but the smoke drifts over to my yard.

It's not clear to me on the covid. He said he had it but then tested negative? Who tested negative?

His son tested positive and my neighbor tested negative, but they live in the same house and he had the same symptoms. I asked about his other son and got kind of a vague answer. Something about he was sick or is sick. I am not sure both boys are living in the house with him. I agree about cigarette smoke. I can't be around it.

Sounds like all three got it. If he is in close physical contact with his sons, that's all it takes. They don't have to be living together. I would stay away and be safe. No reason to take chances.
