OK, I am starting to despair of ever having an actual summer. It is 50 degrees and still raining. For the last month. The grasses and weeds have taken over the poor veggies. What might still survive and produce something? I put in hot peppers, tomatoes, pinto beans for drying, butternut squash, acorn squash, zucchini, summer squash, onions, garlic, and kale. I think the kale is the only thing that is outgrowing the weeds.

Where should I put my effort into clearing out the weeds? Is anything but kale going to make it?

oh honey hang in there the one thing I know about gardening is you never know about gardening!!!!

you could try some rapid growing lettuce ...some spinach in cool weather crops in and around things ...I would just persist and see ..but for sure put some things in that thrive on this and by the time you get all those things started ....and then the sun will come out and make them all bolt!!! LOL I am not negative but ..really this is what happens!!!

gardening is a lifestyle .. for people who love to feel what it is like to be bipolar ..I swear!!!
Nothing gives you the thrill and depression that this does!!! but it also builds fortitude because we just keep at it don't we?????

good luck and I hope the sun comes out for you!!!!!

can you pull some of the baby garlic and onions and just enjoy them now? you need some rewards!!!

hugs!!!!

I feel your pain. Really, I do.

Things that are doing well for me despite lack of sun:

Kale
Alpine strawberries
sugarsnap peas
cabbage
lettuce
spinach
nasturtiums
cress
pole beans
blueberries
raspberries & blackberries
grapevines specially bred for short seasons & rainy climates
sour cherries
potatoes, as long as they were mulched with mostly straw and leafmold compost
nectarine tree, for some reason. Don't know why.

Tomatoes have gotten very leafy so far, and I did have to trellis them. My peppers and eggplants are still tiny.

Oh, yes, I almost forgot the poor eggplant. It is NOT happy. I heard it likes hot weather...

I went out and uncovered my poor hot pepper plants and the eggplants. Trellised up a few tomatoes that were out of control- they seem to be outgrowing the weeds, too. The kale is fantastic! My red onions are still teeny bulbs- I hope they hang in there. I can't find the garlic. The viney garden is put off for tomorrow after work. If it isn't raining.

My eggplants are sulking, as are the peppers, and the melons and squash plants haven't grown much since they germinated. Supposedly summer weather is here for a bit. I'll believe it when I see it!
