Couldn't find any posts on this, but I was curious, because I'm emptying a can :/ of bean sprouts out tonight to make chow mein. Is there any particular kind of bean that you grow for this? I thought I'd grow it for the next time I make this meal. thx :frow

I think most people "sprout" them indoors...not sure about planting them. You can sprout all kinds of beans...

Mung beans. (You can sprout any other kind of bean or lentil, too, each having its own particular taste and texture and size, but the standard beansprouts you buy at the grocery store are from mung beans).

You don't need anything fancy to sprout them, a clean mason jar with cheesecloth rubberbanded across the opening will do. Google for instructions, it is very easy, takes a couple days.

You can buy mung beans for sprouting at an oriental grocery although you cannot be totally confident what if anything they may have been treated with; or you can buy officially sprouting-grade mung bean seeds (much likelier to be untreated) anywhere that sells sprouting seeds, e.g. health food stores, crunchy-healthy-naturey-organic whole foods stores, and some seed catalogs have a 'sprouting seeds' section.

Try sprouting other things too :)

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

Thanks, everyone!! I'm definitely going to try ALL of the above suggestions--you all are the best!!! :hugs
BTW, THIS is what I made yesterday--
Beef Chow Mein (by Ducks4you~ :throw )
A-1 Ginger-Teriaki Marinade
3 pounds precut beef stew meat
2 large onions
2 garlic cloves
2 large sweet peppers
3 stalks of celery
3 large carrots
**1 can :sick baby corn
**2 cans :sick bean sprouts
2 cans water chestnuts
rice
Asian (crunchy type) noodles
Soy sauce
"Fortune" cookies, for dessert
Hot Tea (OF COURSE!!)

Marinade the meat all day in a covered bowl in the refridgerator. Combine ingredients and cook down OR stir-fry. Serve over your favorite rice with noodles and soy sauce. Pot of hot tea, and fortune cookies for dessert. IT was just plain....GOSH DARN GLORIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!! :weee
*EDIT: DD reminded me--Saki, for those who wish!

**Actually, they tasted okay--I just wanted to make it with fresh, but the meal was an afterthought!

I get my sprouting seeds at the same places that I order my vegetable seeds from.
Most all the companies carry them.
As a matter of fact china rose radish and mung sprouting seeds were both delivered to my house today.
I also have on order broccoli sprouts and lentil sprouts.
There is a thread here somewhere about sprouting if you do a search you may find some others as well.
