What kind of nut is this?

I found these on the driveway, which is lined with trees, so I have no way of knowing what the tree looks like that these came from. I know they are pretty nondescript, but they are about 1", and there were some that were green. I cracked one open (which was no mean feat!), and there wasn't much to speak of inside. Any ideas? My best guess is a beech nut.

I would say walnut but they don't have that green outer part... and you would KNOW because they would be everywhere... LOL

That looks like what we have always called "butternut." I don't think there is anything edible to them. The tree I am thinking of is in the hickory family, with a larger softer looking leaf.

I am with Smiles on this one...pignut. Hickories are similar, but the nutshell is a bit more angular.
