What to plant where.

Ok. So I am new to this site. Hi everyone. I have been planting a garden for several years, with average success. I realy don't know what I'm doing though. We just til the ground, Plant the plants, and pick the fruits. I want to do more. I want to know more. I am working on a compost bin to go along w/ the six chickens we just got. My first real question is.... I have heard that there are certain plants that grow better beside other plants. Here is what we will be planting in our garden. Tomatoes, carrots, lettuce, peppers peas, maybe sweet corn (we tried it last year with no success). In another garden we with plant the pumpkins, watermelons, and cukes. So what should we plant beside each other. Any ideas. thanks

Companion planting is very cool. There is a bunch of information on here about companion planting, just do a search to find past threads on it.
