I don't have window boxes. Dh is pretty adamant about not letting me attach things to the house...funny, kid#2 remarked yesterday that he was surprised I didn't have any. Dh shot me a look, like "don't go there", ha!

Are yours in sun or shade? What do you usually grow in them?

Can understand your husband, took I awhile before I added them. House is stucco worrried about drilling into it. but very happy I did, house looks much better. Full sun almost all day. Geraniums and petunias seem to be the only flower that can take sun all day. Did find black petunias never saw them before.

I do not have window boxes either. Always liked the look. Especially with trailing greenery added amongst the flowers.

No window boxes -- just a brick planter beside the steps that I put begonias in. The house is all brick and I don't want (or dare) to attach anything to the brick. I do have plans to add window boxes to the wood shop. I've wanted them for years, but the priority is not high. I also want to add window boxes to the garden shed and the chicken coop windows.

I also have baskets hanging from the house eave troughs for color. This year I chose blue and white petunias in white baskets.

Depending how large your window boxes are, and if you do taller plants (or just hanging/spiller?) ... you could add some different plants to see how they do, maybe sweet potato vine or bacopa, marigolds, or - I really like the salvias I've been using in my deck box - mealy-cup (farinacea) some varieties get about 12" and they hold up great until frost without deadheading. They would add some spiky contrast to your geraniums.

I really love using the sweet potato vines. I am partial to the light green, but the deep burgandy is very pretty, too. Mine are pretty shaded, so my choices are somewhat limited. You can get lots of fun ideas, if you type in window boxes/container gardening on pinterest. I am a month away from planting mine...

If one is inclined to needlessly spend their hard earned money ... go ahead and install the window boxes and add the flowers. However here are some points to consider, the window boxes are the perfect environment for termites and dry rot to enter one's home. Also the points of attachment of the boxes to the house ( nails or screws ) are perfect entry points for moisture to enter and cause damage and dry rot to the house interior / framing.
