I heavily mulched my strawberries and garlic over the winter. I have peeked and all look well and growing. I am still 2 months away from no danger of frost- do I have to wait that long to uncover?? Thanks!

I might be doing something wrong, but it works for me... I never cover my strawberries. They are open and exposed... and come back every spring.

Both of those are very frost-tolerant... the only reason to mulch is to minimize frostheave and to minimize desiccation of the tops if you get really bad wind chill with no snow on the ground.

I would say for sure you can remove the mulch on both of them now, it will help them get back into growth a bit faster. If you have a super cold windy day in the first week or 2 after removing the mulch, or if they look like they are having trouble with the abrupt transition to sunlight, you can lightly re-mulch them for a little while, but it is unlikely you would need to do either of those things.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

I didn't cover mine at all this winter, although I meant to! They are frost tolerant and came back fine. The thing that gets strawberries is hard freezes...it will heave the roots out of the soil and expose them which is what kills them. Freezing and rethawing, freezing and rethawing....the more they'll heave up. You don't want the mulch put on until after you've had the first freeze, then early spring when things start to warm up you can uncover them right away so they can get to work.

I bet today would be perfect for it!

I threw straw over mine for the winter and I removed mine now, just in time to use it as mulch in my pea beds and around my blueberries! So nothing goes to waste. :D
